John W. Farren papers, 1843-1877.

Bound vol. (132 p.) serving successively as a daybook for Farren's Boston mercantile transactions, a logbook/diary recording his voyage to San Francisco aboard the ship Reindeer (Dec. 1849-Apr. 1850), and an account book containing scattered entries during his early employment in San Francisco (1850-1852); together with a certificate of membership in California Engine Co. No. 4 (July 1853), a bank note issued by Adams & Co. (Jan. 1855), a letter to Farren from members of Engine Co. No. 4 (May 1866), and a stock certificate (1877).

Farren was a Boston merchant who arrived in San Francisco in 1850, where he worked as a wheelwright, carpenter, and wagonmaker. He served as a member of the San Francisco Fire Dept., Engine Co.
